The San Diego Police Department has started using the Nixle.com system to send out notifications. The good news is that notifications can be sent for the whole city. The downside is that the updates include everything from car accidents to bank robberies to weather alerts. We will continue to post public safety alerts here and send them out to users that have signed up for our text alerts and email notifications.

Another great resource for happenings in the 92127 4S Ranch area is Jeff Schmitt. His updates include crime alerts as well as lost pets and even rattlesnake alerts. To sign up for his email alerts, email him here. Thanks Jeff for the great resource!

Over the weekend I happened to visit a local animal shelter and it got me to thinking, here are these animals that are locked up and on the outside there are people that like to run and need to be safe. What if we could find a way to pair the two up? I’m thinking that we could partner with certain rescue groups and animal shelters to get their dogs exercised and socialized and at the same time, take our running freedom back.

The basics would be that the dogs would need to have passed their K-9 Good Citizen test and the runners would need to be taught how to correctly run with a dog. From there it could be that a runner makes a reservation and meets the dog at their running location.

Maybe this already exists, but just in case it doesn’t, let me know what your ideas are.

Be about solutions, not problems

San Diego county has been hit hard this month with the disappearance and discovery of Chelsea King and now the discovery of Amber Dubois. What makes these situations hurt so much more is that it feels like they could have been avoided.

With the state in financial turmoil and our city no better off, we have seen many of our basic safety services hit hard with cutbacks.

It makes me sick to my stomach to know that the attempted attack in December wasn’t shared with anyone in the community. That’s a tragedy in itself. It is easy to become angry and want to blame local, county, and state agencies. But it’s at times like these when the motto I give my own children, “Be about solutions, not problems.” has come full circle. It is time for us as a community to start the healing process and do what we can to keep this from happening to any more of our children.

Michelle

P.S. If something has happened in your area, tell us about it so we can share it with everyone. Want alerts to be sent to your cell phone? Sign up for our free service.

For years I’ve worked helping companies market themselves using email and mobile phone messaging. I am thrilled to be able to use some of the same tools to distribute valuable safety information to the members of our communities.

In the neighborhood where our children attended school, if something like an attempted abduction or suspicious behavior towards children happened, an email thread would go out. One parent would start it and send it to their circle of friends and just like a phone tree, the information would get out to a lot of the parents in our area. The idea behind CallMyMom.com is based on that same principle.

We recommend people arm themselves with information. The Megan’s Law website shows the location of registered sex offenders in neighborhoods and is a useful resource. Our service takes being informed one step further because we deliver the information directly to you and in a timely manner so you don’t have to go and search for the latest updates.

Our reports are generated from people in the community as well as local government offices, where possible. We won’t be able to stop every occurrence, but together we will be able to live our lives with knowledge of what is going on around us and less fear of the unknown.

Michelle
